Phonological Aspects of Internal Vowel Alternation in English
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper examines Internal Vowel Alternation (IVA) in Noun Plurals (e.g. 'tooth/teeth') and Past Tense formation (e.g. 'sing/sang') according to the signoriented theory of the Columbia School (CS) in general and the theory of Phonology as Human Behavior (PHB) in particular. Today, these IVA forms are considered to be "irregular", and are vestiges of former prevalent and productive processes in Old English: i.e. ablaut gradation in verbs and i-umlaut in nouns, which: (a) display a fundamental morphophonemic regularity, (b) are both systematic and iconic, and (c) distinguish between nominal versus verbal vowel alternation systems, thus facilitating their identification, acquisition and retention.

The Effect of English Vowel-Recognition Training on Beginner and Advanced Iranian ESL Learners
This study was an attempt to investigate the effect of vowel-recognition training on beginner and advanced Iranian ESL learners. A total of 36 adult Iranian ESL learners (18 advanced and 18 beginners) who were students of various majors at Memorial University (MUN) were recruited for the study. Advanced participants had the experience of living in Canada for at least three years while beginners...
متن کاملAcoustic Analysis of Persian EFL Learners' Pronunciation of English Vowels
This paper reports the results of an experimental study on non-native production of English vowels. Two groups of Persian EFL learners varying in language proficiency were tested on their ability to produce the nine plain vowels of American English. Vowel production accuracy was assessed by means of acoustic measurements. Ladefoged and Maddison’s (1996) F1 F2 measurements for American English v...

متن کاملRussian Loanword Adaptation in Persian; Optimal Approach
In this paper we analyzed some of the phonological rules of Russian loanword adaptation in Persian, on the view of Optimal Theory (OT) (Prince and Smolensky, 1993, 2003). It is the first study of phonological process on Russian loanwords adaptation in Persian. By gathering about 50 current Russian loanwords, we selected some of them to analyze. We found out that vowel insertion, vowel prothesis...
متن کاملExponence and morphosyntactically triggered phonological processes in the Russian verbal complex
This paper examines a non-canonical morphophonological vowel alternation in the roots of Russian verbs that is conditioned by aspectual information (derived imperfectivization). This aspectual morpheme is usually expressed as a suffix, but in the forms of interest appears as a vocalic nucleus in the root (whereas there is no vocalic nucleus in the perfective form). In a manner broadly compatibl...
